CONFIRMATION GROUP

The course runs between January and June. It prepares young people for the Sacrament of Confirmation. The course involves basic instruction on the Sacraments, history of the Church, current moral issues, prayer and the Bible. The children meet every Wednesday for an hour.

They are encouraged to discuss openly and build up a file of their studies.

Part of the course also includes a weekend retreat to St Vincent’s Catholic Youth Centre in Whitstable. The retreat runs from Friday evening until after lunch on Sunday.  It is a weekend, of prayer, reflection, worship and recreation and includes the Sacrament of Reconciliation on the Saturday evening finishing with Sunday Mass then lunch.

The children are always enthusiastic about the course and the retreat. There is a celebration buffet following the Confirmation evening.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist the priest in the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass on Sundays and weekday masses. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion also take the Blessed Sacrament to the sick and housebound.

Ministers of the Word
Ministers of the Word or Readers have the important task of proclaiming the Word of God, contained in the Holy Scriptures at Sundays and weekday Masses.

New members are always welcome. Readers do not need to be professional speakers.

All that is needed is preparation, a clear voice, and a willingness to be committed to a regular timetable.

Please contact the Clergy or Haley Hargreaves for more information.

Altar Servers
For hundreds of years young people have assisted priests by serving at Mass. If you are in Year 3 and would like to train to become a server please speak to Deacon Stephen Newman

Children's Liturgy Group

The name ‘Children’s Liturgy’ is a shortened form of ‘Children’s Liturgy of the Word’ which describes what we do much better than ‘Sunday School’ and again is better than ‘Crèche’. It is not aimed to take children out of the way because they get fidgety in church, nor is it to replace

RE lessons. What the children do in ‘Liturgy’ is to celebrate God’s Word, the first part of the Mass, in a way that is parallel to what is happening in church; to introduce them to god’s love for us.

9.30 a.m. Mass Choir
The choir is in great need of more singers and musicians.
Please do come along to our practices if you feel you can spare an hour a week.
Practices are in the church on Thursday evenings at 8.00 p.m. and usually last no more than an hour.
For further details please contact
Sister Marguerite or speak with any member of the choir after mass.
The 9.30 a.m. mass is a family mass and, since families range from babes in arms to those of great age, we try to have a mix of old and new hymns each week.

The Sisters of Christ

The present Sister in Charge is Sister Marguerite, who has had a very active ministry as head mistress of a primary school on the Isle of White, sister in Charge of Spring Hill, before transferring to Sittingbourne. The Sisters still take an active role in parish life, in the choir, visiting the sick and housebound, parish council, and take part in and enjoy the social events of the parish.

Catenians
Swale Circle holds its meetings in Sittingbourne on the second Tuesday of each month. Meetings start at 7.30pm, beginning and ending with prayers, and is normally followed by social activities which include dinner. “Ladies Nights”, when wives are invited, are held regularly and other social events are organised throughout the year; once a year local clergy are entertained to dinner. The outstanding event in the Circle’s calendar, however, is President’s Sunday when the President invites members and their families to accompany him to Mass and afterwards join him for an informal afternoon of fun, food and entertainment.

St Peters Playgroup
St Peter's Playgroup in Sittingbourne offers seasonal day care and is licensed for children aged 2 years to school age.
The playgroup offers a safe and caring environment where children can learn through play, fostering the growth of the ‘whole’ child in an intellectual, moral and social way. We do consider playgroup to be an extension of the home as well as preparation for life.
Founded in 1983 the playgroup will celebrate 25 years of service to the community with its silver jubilee in 2008.
Please feel free to contact us so that you can arrange to come and see the happy environment your child could enjoy.

The St Vincent de Paul Society (“SVP”)

The St Vincent de Paul Society (“SVP”) is an international Christian voluntary organization dedicated to tackling poverty and disadvantage by providing direct practical assistance to anyone in need. Active in England & Wales since 1844, today it continues to address social and material need in all its many forms.

"Where would we be without the SVP? More than 10,000 volunteers visit and befriend the lonely, give vital material assistance to the destitute, advise the poor on debt, and provide holidays for children who would otherwise have none. Their compassionate action reveals Christ in the prisoners, the homeless and the lonely, and thereby offers inspiration to us all. On behalf of the countless people to whom the SVP has brought hope, I thank you all."

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, Archbishop of Westminster

Due to your continued contributions to the SVP Red Box we were again able to buy approximately 50 small presents before Christmas. Whilst they are small gifts they are always well received.  In addition food vouchers are given to those in need and this includes ‘The Quays’ in Crown Quay Lane.  Biscuits are taken to the Memorial Hospital. Our other charity work continues through the year.  Thank you for your financial support.
