What is the Catenian Association?
The Catenian Association is a group of like-minded practising Catholic laymen,
who share a common faith and values. The Association was founded in Manchester
in 1908 and has now grown to over 10,000 members. Membership is maintained in
local branches known as “Circles” and these are located throughout Great
Britain. In the last 40 years the Association has spread to a number of overseas
countries, including Ireland, Australia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Malta.
The Association’s Circles meet formally once a month for prayer, discussion and
to socialise, and it has been found that this welcoming social environment
fosters warm friendships. Catenians are known to each other as “Brother” and
all Brothers recognise their Christian duty to help their neighbour so that
those who suffer misfortune are sympathetically and generously helped. The
association gives strong support to the institution of the family and to the
Church and supports both charitable and community organisations.
Catenians individually often devote their time and resources to serving the
Church, the civic community and their neighbours. This commitment is voluntary,
but all members recognise that there is an obligation to witness to the way of
Christ by showing an unselfish care and concern for others. You will find that
there are a number of Catenians quietly active in the life and organisation of
our parish and in many ways providing valuable support to the Parish Priest.
Swale Circle
Swale Circle holds its meetings in Sittingbourne on the second Tuesday of each
month. Meetings start at 7.30pm, beginning and ending with prayers, and are
normally followed by social activities which include dinner. “Ladies Nights”,
when wives are invited, are held regularly and other social events are organised
throughout the year; once a year local clergy are entertained to dinner. The
outstanding event in the Circle’s calendar, however, is President’s Sunday when
the President invites members and their families to accompany him to Mass and
afterwards join him for an informal afternoon of fun, food and entertainment.
