9.30 a.m. Mass Choir
‘Christ’s message, in all its richness, must live in your hearts. Teach and instruct each other with all wisdom. Sing psalms, hymns, and sacred songs; sing to God, with thanksgiving in your hearts.’ Col 3:16
The choir is in great need of more singers and musicians. Please do come along to our practices if you feel you can spare an hour a week. Practices are in the church on Thursday evenings at 8.00 p.m. and usually last no more than an hour. For further details please contact Kath Newman or speak with any member of the choir after mass.
The 9.30 a.m. mass is a family mass and, since families range from babes in arms to those of great age, we try to have a mix of old and new hymns each week.
Apart from singing at the Sunday mass the choir also sing at weddings (by invitation) and other parish celebrations such as the Confirmation Mass, Midnight Mass, Carol Services and Reconciliation Services.
For more than 10 years a number of choir members have sung at the annual Mass of Chrism at our Cathedral. They also sang at the Arch Bishop’s Installation Mass and other diocesan celebrations.
There are three diocesan days for singers/musicians held at either the Catechetical Centre in Tooting Bec, or the Franciscan Study Centre in Canterbury. The choir look forward to these days when new music is learnt and friendships are forged between parishes. These days are so uplifting that many people now come from other diocese to join in the fun.
The choir have also enjoyed days/evenings with some of the most popular music composers of the day such as Christopher Walker, Bernadette Farrell, Marty Haugen and Stephen Dean (the compiler of the ‘Laudate’ hymn book).
The highlight of the liturgical year for the choir is the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter). A great deal of work goes into providing the music and singing for this great celebration.
We are very lucky in our parish to have two organists (Sue Bunce and Sue Mahoney) who give generously of their time to play for the more important parish celebrations.
Should you have any favourite hymns that you would like sung then please let Kath know either by handing a note into a member of the choir or leaving an e-mail message to Kath and we will do our best to include it at a suitable mass. Lists of favourite carols would also be very much appreciated.
