DIARY FOR THE WEEK 5th July - 13th July 2008
DAY FOR LIFE 2008 ‘The Lord is close to the brokenhearted: he rescues those who are crushed in spirit’ is the theme for this year’s Day for Life - dedicated to raising awareness about the meaning and value of human life at every stage and in every condition. Day for Life 2008 will focus on mental health. The aim of the Day is to help raise awareness of the needs of those affected by mental ill-health, their friends, their family and their carers and the support that the parish community and professional services can bring. One in four people will be directly affected by mental health difficulties at some stage in their lives. The materials for the day have been developed jointly with the Bishops’ Conferences of Scotland and Ireland. There will be a second collection this week to support Day for Life. Proceeds of the collection will go to the Linacre Centre for Healthcare Ethics and other life-related activities supported by the Church. Gift Aid Envelopes are available along with prayer cards in the church. Donations can also be made online: www.dayforlife.org
Day for Life Prayer - We thank you Lord for the gift of life. Help us to appreciate the unique dignity of every human person and the individual contribution they make to the world, in fulfilment of the task you give them. Enable us by your grace to promote their well-being, serving you in one another in a spirit of generosity, through Christ Jesus Our Lord, Amen.
SEA SUNDAY Next week is Sea Sunday, when the Church remembers all those who live and work at sea. Seafarers are commonly recruited from poorer countries where wages are lower. Seafarers work in difficult and often dangerous conditions suffering from loneliness, spiritual deprivation and even exploitation as they transport the goods we use and consume every day. The Apostleship of the Sea (AOS) is the official maritime welfare agency of the Catholic Church in Great Britain. The Apostleship of the Sea reaches out to seafarers that visit our ports each year, offering pastoral support and care. AOS is wholly dependent on voluntary donations to continue its work; it takes the love of Christ to seafarers in the name of the Church, recognising them as our brothers and sisters in need. Sea Sunday is your chance to help AOS make a real difference to the lives of seafarers. Everything AOS does is on behalf of Britain’s Catholic community, but it receives no statutory funding from either the Church or the government. The parish will take up a second collection on Sea Sunday for the work of AOS—so please give generously next Sunday, their ministry cannot continue without you. GIFT AID ENVELOPES ARE AVAILABLE FOR NEXT WEEK. St. PETER’S PLAYGROUP You are invited to join St. Peter’s Playgroup celebration of it’s Silver Jubilee. We have been serving the Parish for 25 years. To mark this occasion we are having the Holy Mass for our intention at 9.30 am on Sunday 13th July, followed by a display and refreshments in the O’Sullivan Centre. Everyone is invited, so we hope to see you there If you have worked with us or been with us as a parent or child and have any photos we could add to the display we would be very happy to use them. Please leave them in an envelope in the Presbytery or bring them into playgroup when we are in session. Thank you for your good will and support, we could not have done it without you.
LUCKY NUMBERS 200 CLUB We had an excellent response at last weekend’s Masses - all of the envelopes containing application forms and standing orders forms have now been taken by parishioners. This should mean that we have an excellent chance of issuing all 200 numbers - there is a legal requirement for us to do this before we can have a draw. A reminder about methods of payment - standing order is the preferred way, but if this is a difficulty, cheques for £12 per number required can be accepted. Please ensure that you complete the forms and return them to the presbytery as soon as you can so that we can arrange the first monthly draw.
CONFIRMATION 2008 A copy of the DVD of the celebration on 17th June is available to each of the young people who were confirmed on that evening. Please see Fr Michael.
CAR PARKING All of you who use the car park to the rear of the church will know how congested it can get at busy times, most especially the periods immediately before and after the Saturday evening and Sunday Masses. A number of parishioners have expressed their concerns of late about the haphazard nature of some of the parking in the car park. This matter was also raised at the most recent Parish Council meeting. This is simply a reminder about the importance of parking ONLY in the marked parking bays. There have been a number of instances recently of parishioners being delayed and/or blocked in because of the inconsiderate parking of others. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
LIFE Volunteers are needed for the Charity LIFE, full counselling Training given, or if you have Counselling Skills please come and help us. Phone Agnes Rees Coordinator for London: 07515578598, or email: agnesrees@lifecharity.org.uk GIFT AID ENVELOPES New and existing Gift Aiders - there are some remaining envelopes for collection in the church porch.
UNION OF CATHOLIC MOTHERS The UCM would like to thank all who attended the Cheese and Wine Bring and Buy evening, which raised £463.07 for the Oliver Fisher Baby Unit. The generous support of parishioners is appreciated.
WORKING FOR A GREENER PARISH You will be pleased to know that we are now using only energy- efficient light bulbs in the church! Thank you to the men who go up a very tall ladder to fit them.
