A DEACON’S VOCATION
Deacon undergo three years of training - but like many vocations, they continue growing and strengthening their role after ordination.
Stephen’s role in our Parish is to assist the priest in three main ways:
At the altar; The Deacon assists at the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Stephen will stand beside the priest, but a little to the rear, and when required, help with the chalice and Missal. He will help with the distribution of the Eucharist. Stephen can administer the solemn blessings of Baptism, marriages and the rites of funeral and burial.
Stephen’s second role is to proclaim the Word. He will read the Gospel and sometimes preaches. He is involved with the sacramental preparations for marriage and baptism, and takes pastoral care of the children’s Liturgy Catechists.
The third role for Stephen is in the works of charity. Acts of Charity for both priest and deacons are normally very personal and often only the recipient will know about it. It isn’t always monetary, but through the giving of time, space and a much needed ‘ear’ over a cup of tea. More visibly, is the time devoted to sections of church life involved in charitable works, SVP, Catenians, UCM etc.
We are very lucky in our Parish to have a hard working Deacon who is approachable, gives his time freely to parishioners, parish activities, as well as supporting the Deanery, He is Assistant Director of the Deaconate, and assists with the formation of new Deacons.
